Rick Woods was a Union activist who passed away suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 50 leaving behind a teenaged daughter, Nicki who is autistic. His death was tragic for all who knew him. The members of Local 5328 wanted to do something to remember him and to provide for his daughters educational needs.

The result was the Rick Woods Memorial Golf Tournament. This best ball tournament has grown considerably over the many years it has been successful thanks to the efforts of a group of Union volunteers. As Nicki has grown the focus of the tournament has changed.

The Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council now partners with Local 5328 in organizing this event. The underlying reason for the Rick Woods Memorial Golf Tournament remains strong; remember a true hero among us who was taken too early in life.

In his name he is still able to help his community.

This year the Hamilton Area Council was able to present a cheque for $10,000.00 to Hamilton Foodshare as they kick off their summer campaign. This brings the total donations of the Area Council over the last twelve years to well over $250,000.00.

For Hamilton Steelworkers, community matters. This golf tournament, which has wide reaching support, is just one of the many ways they are able to show it.
