How could you not ask Carla to take part in your project? Well apparently I could, because the first time that I saw her I let her walk past and disappear into Eldon Square shopping centre. So with yet another self admonishing regret I turned and continued on my way down the street alongside the shopping centre. Even worse, this was the second really colourful stranger that I'd failed to ask in the space of only a few minutes.
As I reached Monument I continued on my normal route back to work but on a whim I stopped and went a different route instead - taking me past a couple of exits from the shopping centre and I told myself that if I happened to be lucky enough to see Carla again then I simply had to "man up" and ask her this time.
The rest as you can see is history. As I reached the first of those exits at Eldon Gardens, Carla was so easy to spot with her bright attire. And true to my own challenge I walked straight up to her and asked ;).
Carla was very obliging and seemed amused by the entire idea but also more than happy to take part. I asked her to move to the side to get an uncluttered background and as I raised the camera to my eye she just beamed the most wonderful smile.
I didn't chat much with Carla, I'm pretty sure she was struggling with my accent. She is from Nigeria originally but has been studying in Newcastle for the last month doing a Masters in Business Studies. She has no firm plans for afterwards other than to get work. She lists her interests as make-up which I think is clear for all to see and she likes music, but nothing in particular - just stuff that's "good".
Carla, thanks very much for helping me with my project today - you have a beautiful smile and moments such as when your face lit up as you posed the first time are what make this project so rewarding. Best of luck with your studies and the future.
