Oh yes! I WAS THERE!!
Before I describe this photo...
You may not agree with my views...and that's fine...we don't have to always agree. This is not posted to glorify a man - Glenn Beck - this is posted because I love my country. Plain and simple. It is also posted because I do not trust the media to report what really happened there.
I had the distinct privilege of witnessing Glenn Beck receive the key to the city of Mt. Vernon last night!!! My brother got me a ticket for my birthday...the best gift ever...and we went together and witnessed a hometown boy honored for his incredible accomplishments! The emphasis was on restoring the local historical theater...and that WAS the emphasis inside the venue. Glenn Beck personally matched the money the gathering had raised for the theater...and told stories of his childhood - growing up in Mt. Vernon, Washington. He was an incredible speaker...funny as heck...my smile muscles hurt when we left! The gathering was surprisingly non-political!
As for outside...wow. There were hundreds of people demonstrating! The support FOR Glenn far outweighed the support AGAINST...BUT...it was very interesting to say the least. The anti-Glenn people were trying to make a bigger impact by walking up and down the sidewalks with bullhorns...asking why we would support such a ------? The few that did stop to actually have a conversation were met with questions such as "Aren't you glad you live in a country where you have freedom of speech?"... a woman went by us saying that Glenn had said very racist things which she was repeating for our benefit...we asked her where she'd heard that because it was not true...and she couldn't answer us. "I just heard it...someone told me" she said. We told her not to believe everything she hears - to check her sources - excellent advise for every single one of us - and she looked genuinely surprised...we hadn't spewed back at her...I think she was disappointed.
Another observation was quite interesting to me...only a handful of protesters had flags...most of them were standing in groups with pre-printed signs and no flag in sight. There were a couple of Mexican flags, however. The cars in support of Glenn's visit honked and waved...several cars in protest of his visit, flipped us off.
Our country is divided...President Bush was called a liar, a nazi...and a plethora of other names I won't repeat here...that's fine. It's everyone's right to express their opinions publicly...I'm grateful for that right. The stark contrast now is disheartening. You can't call a president a liar who is blatantly lying...the fact-checks bear that out...without being called a racist. I don't know any racists...but I know a lot of people who can identify a lie.
I was encouraged by this experience. I think the number of those who support our country and our freedoms is growing. I am thankful for our military...I'm thankful for the growing number of people who are bold enough to speak out, bold enough to hold a sign and stand up for what they believe in, bold enough to do what they can to protect our freedom, whether on foreign soil or on our own precious soil at home.
God Bless America!
