This I Believe Workshop with Len Newman
Habla, based in Merida, Mexico, is an international education center and lab school focused on developing creative and meaningful ways of teaching literacy and language. Each year international educators visit to collaborate and mutually learn from each other. One of these educators who visited this year is Len Newman from Rhode Island.

Len and Habla collaboratively developed the This I Believe workshop and master class which then led to This I Believe essays being used throughout the curriculum at all language levels. Habla is influenced by the ideas of Brazilian educator Paulo Frieire who believed that to teach language we must first begin with the worlds of the students rather than with grammar, vocabulary lists, and textbooks. We’ve found that the This I Believe essays motivate and inspire students to find their own words to discuss what they deeply care about.
