Tucker Sno-Cat tracked vehicle (1958)
On 2 March 1958 this Sno-Cat and three others completed the first motorised crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole. It was part of a Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Vivian Fuchs. The vehicles were used to carry the heavy equipment for the seismic survey of the continent. They pulled long freight sledges.
The Sno-Cats operated in temperatures down to -55 degrees C and they averaged 22 miles a day. They were originally designed to allow the maintenance of overhead telephone lines in the USA and Canada in the depth of the winter snow.
