Demoiselle Cranes have changed the landscape of Khichan literally. A small sleepy town in the vicinity of Phalodi, 150 km north of Jodhpur on the Bikaner-Jaisalmer road, Khichan has now become a much favored bird watching vacation destination in India. Come August and these cranes flock in large numbers to Khichan.
Early morning and afternoon meal times are maintained by the villagers, and throughout the high season (November through February) up to five 'quintals' (500 kg/ 1100 pounds) of grain per day is spread out for the birds. This is all paid for by monetary donations from locals and visitors (International Crane Foundation and others) and administered by Kuraj Sanrakshan Vikas Sansthan, a newly established society in Khichan for crane protection and care.
