Drainage channel in Kamokya, Kampala

When contaminated with human excreta the drainages pose a significant risk of spreading diseases. A common emptying practice for the pit latrines is to open the pits when it is raining heavily. Thus the pit latrines get emptyied for "free". The remains of that process often stay in the drainages. Two recent outbreaks of cholera in another slum area witness that risk.
