A Sign of Times Gone By
Seattle is tearing down its huge, ugly, yet oddly endearing downtown Alaskan Way Viaduct -- a two level concrete expressway built in 1953 -- and as the demolishing begins they allowed people to walk along a closed section of it today.
This sign -- presumably indicating that you are passing over Charles Street -- was probably accurate at one time before the building of sport stadiums caused Charles to terminate several blocks away. So this is a another little bit of history that will disappear along with the viaduct.
In the background are the shipping containers and giant cranes of Seattle's shipyards.
