Still Life with Rosary Bead, Baltimore, MD

This boxwood rosary bead features an intricate filigree of late Gothic open work tracery by an anonymous Flemish artist. This virtuoso Renaissance period piece was most probably created between 1500 and 1525 in Belgium and is on display in the Collector's Study at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.

Rosary beads of this type were typically pendants to a high quality rosary and would be considerably larger than the rest of the beads.

This rosary opens to reveal a scene of Christ carrying the cross and the Crucifixion.
