Detail of the masonry of the old Sears department store in downtown Fort Dodge. The second image is a 100% crop of the detail at the top of the building, showing a nice carved lion, and what I assume is a bust of the French King Louis XIV. Why there are a series of heads of the Sun King on a midwestern American department store built in the Chicago-style is anyone's guess, but it is stonework details like that and the limestone and brickwork design elements that are no longer found in modern architecture.
Like many of the grand old buildings in our downtown, this building has been repurposed as affordable housing for those with modest incomes.
