Many employers ruined the public image of the technical person on any level in the past decades. They put the emphasis on the sales activities, forgetting the manufacturing and quality control. These things happened because of the greed and to satisfy the shareholders. Good part of the manufacturing was farmed out, mostly to foreign countries. We, consumers try to blame each other for not buying American goods, but fail to blame the industrialists who move their manufacturing abroad.
Why should anybody be a design engineer while the sales engineer earnes twice as much with less effort and responsibility?
The other problem is with the omnipotent insurance companies. They braiwashed everybody that age over 40 means over the hill. Companies are afraid to hire older people because of the insurance cost. The hiring officials tend to forget that a good number of even retired individuals would work happily. So, this stays and untapped resource.
