Ensign Lake Island Camp Site Sunrise

Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Ely, Minnesota

August 28 - September 2, 2015

After a rocky start trying to leave work Friday evening, I drove 297 miles to meet Ken, Rick and Brant at the Adventure Inn in Ely.

We woke up early Saturday morning and had an excellent, hearty breakfast at Britton's Cafe and then drove North to LaTourell's Moose Lake Resort & Outfitters.

Jonathan loaded our gear and a couple of WeNoNah Canoes and took us to Prairie Portage. From there, we paddled and portaged our way to our campsite on Knife Lake. We stayed there for a few days fishing & exploring Knife & Portage Lakes.

Ken planned a two day return trip to Moose Lake. After a rocky, steep and slippery 200 rod portage, we stopped and had a nice lunch on a beautiful campsite on Vera Lake. Rested and fueled up we paddled on to the 180 Rod portage to Ensign Lake. We set up camp on another beautiful campsite on an island on Ensign.

Ken prepared Bacon & Eggs, before we packed up camp and voyaged back to Moose Lake.

Fishing results:

Ken caught the most:

1 Small mouth Bass

1 Northern

2 Leeches (using his feet, a 3rd got away)

Rick:

1 Northern

1 Walleye

Brant:

1 Northern

(Grant was the quickest, catching his Northern within the first 10 minutes of fishing)

Myself: I did not fish, but I caught one leech myself.

Each fish was not large enough alone to prepare a proper meal and were spread out over the trip, so all were released back into the lakes.

It turned out to be a fun trip with a great group. Everyone in the Ely area was friendly and helpful.

I hope everyone else had as good a time as I had.
