Lunar Eclipse

Totality Phase

3:04 AM ~ December 21st, 2010

Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The last time a Lunar Eclipse occurred during the Winter Solstice was in 1638. The next time will be on Dec. 21, 2094

A lunar eclipse takes place when the sun, earth and moon are all perfectly aligned with the Earth in the middle. When the moon passes behind the earth, the sun's rays are blocked from striking the moon directly but create an eerie hue as they pass through earth's atmosphere onto the moon. This can only occur when the moon is full.

Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be seen for a few moments from any specific spot, a lunar eclipse can be viewed for several hours.

ah, so you saw it! well done! I missed the last one, and it will be just my luck that it will be cloudy in 2094... ;) I did see a nice lunar eclipse two years ago, though.

Nice work- love the colors. Becamse much too hazy for us in upstate NY to see this view--the moon was nearly lost and fog and then just gone... :)

Very dramatic! The long(ish) exposure has made the clouds very lively, and the whole thing has an eery air of mystery ... :)
