They've landed...

With the coast finally getting weeks of summer heat and days of nothing but sunshine, the two large squash plants are producing like crazy. These are a white pattypan, a summer squash and my neighbours and I have been eating them up on a daily basis. There's about 20 little ones on the plants, working their way to the kitchen. What a delight to finally have a substantial harvest of something from the garden!

LOL at your title. Years ago I actually had a dream about being attacked by these! Now they just look pretty to me. And yummy.

Welcome back, Barb! We've missed you. Hope you had a wonderful visit with family.

So...How do you eat/cook these cute patty pans? You know, they'd be a great display in a whitewashed home decor too!

Hazel, thanks for the welcome back message. It was a busy few weeks, with little or no computer time, except for checking ferry schedules! I know I've missed heaps of good things around flickr-ville. I really had to spend the last five days in the garden and doing laundry (my grey water tank will only hold so much, so I had to space out the washing of sheets and towels...great weather for drying everything on the line, though).
With the pattypan squash, I've just been trimming off the stem and flower bit, cubing it and frying with garlic and olive oil. The skin is soft like zucchini and I didn't even have to clean out any seeds...very yummy

Barb Sounds delish! I must plant these next year. I only have room for one 'vine crop' so these would be fun instead of zucchini. Of course there's always the compost bin for a vine:

A vine makes a lovely decorative disguise for the compost bin.

That's a double-duty compost bin offering up such wonderful pumpkin surprises! The pattypan squash is a bush variety...even though the leaves are massive, there aren't vines attempting to take over the back yard. It started producing huge blossoms almost right away, but nothing happened until the last couple of weeks.

Thanks, everyone...it's good to be back. Now I just have to try and take a look at the gazillion photos I've missed during the family hiatus!

Love these too. Yes, many of us are overdue with looking at each-other photos. Summer weather kept us outside enjoying time with family and friends and our gardens...

Nice! This was the only summer squash I knew of growing up-we always had it sauteed with onions and garlic too. My mom used bacon grease but I like olive oil.

I've never tried this squash, but am willing to growing anything that promises to be prolific.
