The Greenpeace Airship A.E. Bates flies over the Portland Generating Station in Portland, Pa., Aug. 11, 2011, with a banner reading “If You Can Read This, You Are Breathing Coal Pollution.” The Portland Generating Station is the fifth highest emitter of sulfur dioxide in the nation.
On February 29, 2012, GenOn announced it would be closing the Portland Generating Station and seven other coal-fired power stations throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio. The stations will be phased out starting in June of 2012 and complete deactivation by 2015.
