Stephen Boyd & Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur
Ben-Hur and Messala drink a toast to each other at a reunion in Jerusalem which has tragic results
According to the late Gore Vidal, he persuaded the director of Ben-Hur, William Wyler, to intruduce a homosexual subtext to the relationship between Ben-Hur and Messala. Apparently Boyd was well aware of this angle to the story, but Heston was kept in the dark. There has been some support for Vidal's version of events, but chief among those who dismissed it as nonsense was Heston himself.
