PunkinHead

Madison Wisconsin

Fall 2005

For those

who always have a costume

or two that waits for no season

the steamer trunk in the corner

personalities stuffed in the bottom drawer

make up in the top drawer

costumes hung like meat in a butcher shop

the various shows decorate the trunk

in handbills from ancient vaudeville shows

meanwhile pumpkin head

moves from town to town

streaks of grease paint

partial camouflage baffling CSI

the leaves from the naked trees are the canary

singing in the mine shaft

as photosynthesis halts

and gravity pulls them

in a swirl everything

hangs in longer shadows

as the color of gourds are everywhere

nights are filled with stories from

every working family

of the horrors in the night

when green is pulled toward red

sliding to all hallows eve

when the personalities

roll out of the steamer trunk

under the watchful eye of moon light
