Fat Chance Belly Dancers at Gay Pride 2009
This troupe called "Fat Chance Belly Dance" was created by Carolena Nericcio in 1987. Seen here on Market Street, San Francisco, during the 2009 Gay Pride Parade, they fascinated the crowd with their exciting improvisational technique. The group has refined a montage of different "tribal" elements into what has been coined "American Tribal Style" bellydance.
Bellydance is both a celebration of the female spirit and a physical display of the strength and beauty of women. Its roots can be traced back to the rituals of past matriarchal cultures and to the secular entertainments that evolved as the itinerant performers traveled through India, Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Spain.
The structure seen in the background (at the end of Market Street) is called the 'Ferry Building'. Atop the building is a large clock tower that was modeled after the 12th century Giralda bell tower in Seville, Spain (see www.flickr.com/photos/greatestpaka/7065108613/ )
