Lucien Labaudt's "Powell Street"

This mural by Lucien Adolphe Labaudt (1880-1943) is located along the walls of a spiral staircase in Coit Tower that is not generally open to the public. The mural depicts a street scene on San Francisco's Powell Street and is painted on both walls. Labaudt was also a noted fashion designer hence the detail reflected in the clothing worn by the subjects in this mural.

Labaudt was a native of France who studied in Europe before emigrating to the U.S. in 1906 and finally to San Francisco in 1911. He had a dressmaking shop on Powell Street and was an artist in his spare time ultimately emerging as one of the West Coast's finest painters. During World War II he went to Asia as an artist correspondent for Life Magazine and was killed in a plane crash enroute to China from India. Labaudt's murals are also displayed at the Beach Chalet in San Francisco.
