Kiyosumi Maru - Gas mask, Chuuk 2009
During the war in the Pacific, Truk Lagoon was the main base for the Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy. On the 17th and 18th February 1944, the American "Operation Hailstone" attacked the fleet anchored at Truk.
As a result of this attack, 10 Japanese naval vessels and 31 transports were sunk and almost 200 aircraft were destroyed. Many of these are in water shallow enough to dive, so that this is now possibly the best location in the world for wreck divers to visit.
The Kiyosumi Maru was a 137 metre-long freighter with 6 holds. At the time of the attack, she was in the repair anchorage off Fefan Island and suffered hits by torpedoes and bombs from aircraft launched from the Yorktown and Enterprise. 43 crew were killed in the attack. She came to rest on her port side at a depth of ~31 metres. The shallowest point is at ~19 metres.
