Theotokos, Advent Icon, 2010
A community-created icon made of torn Christmas advertisements.

"Theotokos" means "Bearer of God," or literally, "Container of God." We often translate this to "Mother of God."

Symbolically, we deconstructed the commercialism of the public holiday and transformed it into a spiritual symbol--Mary, the Mother of God.

This particular image is also called "Our Lady of the Sign" because she shows forth Jesus.

Her title references a passage from Isaiah 7:14, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel".
