My wife points out, duh, that you're fascinated by your pregnant wife.

This is a very attractive portrait, but she looks worried. If you'd taken the shot with a "burst" feature you could have picked out a more attractive expression. I don't think the GF-1 has a burst capability, though. Try the Sony Alpha SLT a55, now my favorite for portraits.

Oops, you took this shot with the Canon. I'll bet it has a burst capability.

Nice capture, but I do agree with daisy70.

daisy70: thanks. nice to see some constructive criticism for a change! however i have to disagree with you. in my opinion it's the worried expression(and the shadow cast over her by the wee niece) that make this picture interesting rather than just another beach snap and i have plenty of pictures of Roberta on here already with what you'd call a more attractive expression. i even have a few pictures with her smiling but whilst those are great for our photo albums(although we don't have any) and that awful social networking website that everyone(including me) uses, they don't interest me artistically so they generally won't appear on here.

As for continuous shooting it's not really my cup of tea. I prefer a more manual approach to photography. I don't like autofocus lenses, 5FPS burst shooting, live-view, video functions and all that other stuff that gets between me and the machine. in fact if i could get a DSLR where you had to manually advance the frame(or recock the shutter anyway) I'd be happy. what i'd really like is a DSLR which is basically like my nikon F3 with the interchangeable prism/waist level finder but with a digital sensor. that would be very nice thankyou very much. or more realistically a basic affordable digital back for the Hasselblad would be awesome!

I really need to try that burst mode... I wonder if my camera has it - might make me a better photographer - or not....

I really like this photo. Roberta's expression and her interaction with the wee one tell a story rather than just being a nice photo of a pretty face. The DOF is perfect with the background subjects (out of focus, but still distinguishable), which gives it all context and makes this a very iconic shot. I might add that I think the number of people in the background (you lined them all up, right?) creates a distinct atmosphere, as opposed to one or two people in the background, which would have a very different feel.
      Sorry to ramble on...
      Well done.

Mothslayer: ramble all you like. thanks for the analysis. Yeah they're all unpaid extras. They're doing it because they believe strongly in contemporary visual arts. At least i assume so but i don't really know as i don't speak Italian.

Notraces: your stuff is still my benchmark for pictures of kids. Won't be long now till i get started on that.

Wonderful shot! Her body language and her facial expression makes this photo very special and interesting. A very good observation. Well done!
