I met Connie while walking through Lands End park in San Francisco. She is originally from Oklahoma, and visited the west coast on vacation over 50 years ago and fell in love with the landscape. Shortly thereafter she moved out to the bay area and got a job at the VA hospital.
Connie had brought a garbage bag with her and was picking up trash as she walked through the beautiful landscape. I stopped Connie and thanked her for picking up other people's litter. She told me she was a volunteer for the Lands End park and always makes a point of picking up trash while walking through the park. I asked if I could take her portrait so I could spread the word about her efforts of making public areas clean. She said I could, and wanted me to make sure to mention that although she was wearing a Mount Rushmore hat that she was in fact in California so viewers wouldn't be confused.
I told her about the 100 strangers project and she joked if she was the strangest of the strangers. Definitely not, but yet another great interaction thanks to the project.
