Beavers lived nearby. One pair had been trapped out of their lodge two years ago, but this year a beautifully constructed new lodge and dam appeared about a 15-minute walk from our camp. Come evening, some evenings, some of us made pilgrimages out there to look for them.
They were shy beavers, and sometimes we waited a long time with no sign, or just a single sweep or gunshot of a tail down to the water, and then nothing.
With such a long twilight there was no particular need for haste, either for humans or for beavers.
