The everlastingly thoughtful Greg sent me this skull in the mail and I love it. I confirmed his suspicion that it was a raccoon skull primarily by its size, the number of teeth it has (or rather the number of teeth plus empty sockets it has -- it is missing a few of its choppers), and the fact that the hard palate, or the roof of the mouth, extends far beyond the line of the last molar -- which you can see here. And finally, according to this, the absence of a pronounced sagittal crest, or ridge running along the top of the skull, would seem to indicate the raccoon was a young animal when it died -- but really, I am unsure of how much I can reasonably trust "Will's Skull Site."

Whatever its age, it's a very neat little thing indeed.
