BANGLADESH114/FORLORN

The streets of DHAKA BANGLADESH in the morning........packed streets traffic stopped

cacophony, fumes, xenophobic stares, only Bengali spoken, i am called a BUNDHU ( friend) noticed from meters away, and welcomed by at least 200 people a day. The masses very rarely see foreigners. Especially if you are a blonde blue eyed women, my companion who had to wear full BURKHA or she could not leave the hotel.

Without full head face and body coverage she was surrounded by minimally 50 men/boys onlookers all the time everywhere we walked.

We were forced to enter a tailor with 100 faces peering through the door.

Once covered, she walked quite freely but never felt comfortable doing so.

The sadness, weak and dispirited subjects here depict the moment. This is not one happy city. This is overpopulation, pollution, cacophony, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, not to mention the most unlivable cities of the world. Here there is PAIN. What people have to do to get through a day here would torture Westerners.

THESE FORLORN FIGURES:

summarize how i felt in DHAKA

FORLORN..........CAUGHT MY EYE AND TO THIS DAY STILL DO.

THE PHOTO IS ABOUT THEM.

TAKE AWAY EVERYONE ELSE AND EVERY OTHER THING IN THIS PHOTOGRAPH.

THEY ARE THE PROTAGONISTS

THEY ARE THE MOOD

THEY ARE THE GOINGS ON

THEY ARE THE ONLY THING THAT MATTER IN THIS SCENE OF DHAKA

THEY SET THE TONE

THEY CREATE THE MOLD

THEY HELP US KNOW DHAKA

THEY HELP US FEEL THIS OTHERWISE EUTHYMIC INNOCUOUS IMAGE

THEY ARE THE IMAGE...................

THEY ARE ALONE

{{Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the principal city of Dhaka District. Dhaka is a megacity and one of the major cities of South Asia. Located on the banks of the Buriganga River, Dhaka, along with its metropolitan area, has a population of over 12 million, making it the largest city in Bangladesh. It is the most densely populated city in the world and it form's world's 9th largest metropolitan area. Dhaka is known as the City of Mosques and renowned for producing the world's finest muslin.

Modern Dhaka is the center of political, cultural and economic life in Bangladesh. Although its urban infrastructure is the most developed in the country, Dhaka suffers from urban problems such as pollution, congestion, and lack of adequate services due to the rising population. In recent decades, Dhaka has seen modernization of transport, communications and public works. The city is attracting large foreign investments and greater volumes of commerce and trade. It is also experiencing an increasing influx of people from across the nation.

Dhaka is consistently ranked as one of the least livable cities in the world.
