Cupcake in B&W

This photo is for my photography class mid-term. Each student was given a photographer to study and then to take a photo using that photographer's style. My photographer was Yousuf Karsh. When we turn in our assignment, we will also turn in a sample of our photographer's actual work, so the rest of the class can see a side by side, and how our photo used similar design elements. Here is the photo I will show side by side mine, karsh.org/#/the_work/portraits/marian_anderson/

When I first looked at Yousuf Karsh's work I was a little intimidated, as his work is so elegant, professional and beautiful, and I am SUCH a beginner. I also didn't know what person I would photograph, since portraits are the base of Karsh's work. But my professor (knowing I enjoy food photography) said that I could photograph one of my cupcakes, just using similar photographic style. I made this cupcake specifically for this photo. I needed it to be rich, classic, and elegant, with a good balance of light and dark elements.

I haven't actually turned this in yet, but I showed it to my professor at class last night to see if he had any suggestions for change, and he said that it looked great, and was "Spot on”. (yay!)
