Holy Cross Project Rain Garden Install
ERM Foundation provided a grant to finish the remaining three rain gardens at the Holy Cross Project! The existing drainage consisted of drainage ditches in front of the single family homes. Volunteers from ERM, Groundwork New Orleans, AmeriCorps NCCC, Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development, and Global Green USA first excavated 3 ft. of existing clay soil and grass. Filter fabric was installed on the culvert pipes to protect from soil blockage. The honeycomb plastic water storage media was wrapped in filter fabric as well. Water storage media was placed at the bottom of the excavated ditches and covered with a biomixture soil which can absorb water quickly. Native plant species were planted with pine straw mulch to prevent weed growth and keep moisture close to soil. These rain gardens will absorb water quickly to prevent street flooding and will act as a natural filter as the rain recharges ground water. Rain gardens and bioswales help to decrease the burden on the storm water system.
