I'm pretty pleased with my first portrait, I learned a lot about what NOT to do! I'm still debating grout on this....thoughts?

I tend to think that most mosaic portraits look better before grouting but that is a personal preference! I'd grout the background and leave the face. It's all up to you in the end. :)

Your photo has been featured on the Flickr Mosaic Artists blog!

Pull back from the screen and squint your eyes. See how it comes together a little more? That's what grout would do.

This is just completely fabulous! The grout question? Hmmm... I really messed up a portrait I did recently with grout... but I really think it was because of my choice of glass for the face...apparently it was more transparent than I realized and the grout seeped under and was visible from behind. Otherwise it would've been great. And I'm a newbie so that's my excuse, teehee... so I guess my advise hasn't been great! But this portrait is simply amazing!!

Now I'm working on a portrait in smalti so I don't have to grout... guess we'll see how that turns out!

Sharon, Have you thought about putting some dry powdered grout on the mosaic and see how you like it. You can always take it out with a sable paint brush if you want it to stay ungrouted.

      (( You know what I'd say... ))

      Again, he's wonderful.

I've been thinking about mosaic portraits a lot recently and this is the exact piece of work I wish I'd made! It has the directness, energy and joy of colour and form that you see in Gauguin paintings, really fresh.
      Grout it!
If it was me, I would avoid having different coloured grouts etc. - just go for a single neutral greyish grout to pull the piece together in a simple classic way that doesn't look fussy or compete with the colour work in the mosaic.
Well done and thank you for your inspiration!

I love the "learned what not to do" the next time comment because we've all been there with every medium. That's how we grow. I think this is fantastic! You really captured character and personality with your choices of cuts and colors. Congratulations!

Fantastic job well done:) I've just come down from the shed after embarking on my first portrait, arghhhhh, and I will probably be asking the same question about grout LOL

Oh and what did you end up grouting him in??

    19. Glass Garden Creations / Sharon Kelly 37 months ago | reply

Hi Liz, this is STILL ungrouted! I have it beside my bed and look at it every day, but still am undecided on gouting! Good luck on your portrait!
