Archbishop Tutu and Mabel van Oranje, Girls Not Brides, visit to Zambia
From 15 to 18 September 2014, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mabel van Oranje visited Zambia to listen and learn about efforts to end child marriage in the country. Zambia has the 16th highest rate of child marriage in the world: 42% of girls are married by the age of 18.

Their visit included a meeting with girls who participate in the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme, run by Population Council and YWCA Zambia. They also met Chief Shakumbila from Central Province who is working to dissuade families in his community from marrying off their daughters as children.

Archbishop Tutu is a co-founder of Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage. Mabel van Oranje is Chair of Girls Not Brides.
