Child marriage projects in Amhara, northern Ethopia
In Amhara, a region in northern Ethiopia, as many as 4 in 5 girls are married before the age of 18.

These photos show a project, run by the Ethiopian government with the support of the Population Council and the United Nations Population Fund, in which the whole community is involved in discussion about the benefits of educating girls and delaying marriage.

Child marriage is a central challenge to development – it endangers girls’ health, restricts their education, and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage was established in September 2011 to help address this practice.
