We first saw this caribou from about several hunded feet away, down in a depression of a valley. He quickly disappeared, and when we thought that he was gone, he suddenly showed up on the park road behind us.
The bus driver managed to get the other people on the bus to be quiet, and the caribou passed us on the side of the road, only a few feet away from the bus. We listeed to the sound of his breathing as he sauntered past, and then continued up the road in front of us.
The bus couldn't pass him on the road, so we kept a hundred feet behind him and crept along at the same pace he was going. I hoped that he didn't decide to take a break on the road, because the bus would have been stuck until he decided to go on. (There are very strict policies about not interfering with any wildlife in the park.)
Finally he scrambled up the higher side of the road, and grazed in the pasture as we stopped one more time to get a good look at him. He had a really magnificant rack, as you can see...
