Laser Bento

The shading is done using a halftone with a very light etch. Since the nori is textured and varies in thickness, it was better to go lightly and risk having the shading fade out, than go heavily and pierce all the way through.

I think I could also get this effect by going straight through the nori with very precise dots of laser light.

I've had the idea of doing some laser cut nori for years. It looks so analogous to paper, and the art that's made from it for sushi and similar has a very papery aesthetic. So, given that I've got a laser cutter and eventually EVERYTHING goes into the laser cutter, I gave it a try.

The scene depicted is from Princess Jellyfish (海月姫, Kuragehime) where the shy main character Tsukimi gets dolled up by her cross dressing friend Kuranosuke. It's based on an illustration by Onija Tarou.

Numidas Prasarn { } is responsible for the lovely bento, featuring grilled octopus, beef shumai, tempura shrimp and winter squash.
