Yacyretá Dam (hydroelectric power plant)

A special visit we had to Yacyreta in May, the largest power plant in Argentina placed on the Paraná river. And I think the largest in the world done on a flat land. It has 18 power turbines specially designed for its purpose.

It's a binational project between Argentina and Paraguay. Currently Yacyreta is working at 60% of its designed capacity due to the fact that if they enlarged the dam it would flood the cities nearby. My father is working in Posadas, the capital city of Misiones, as administrator of the civil construction assigned to elevate the coast level of the city in order to allow Yacyreta to work on full potential. However, as per my knowledge, Encarnación (the satelite city of Paraguay right in front of Posadas across the Parana river, is doing mostly nothing on this regard, which will mean that there will be delays in the final implementation of Yacyreta's full potential.

I immediately think of Philip Glass's musical composition "The Dam" when I look at this. (Tried to find it on the web to give a sample of the music, but found no good links.)

This kind of a project involves a lot of work and cooperation between different "entities", different interests. Many different systemic environments and realities to consider. Both the cost and the payoff involve more than just money. The complexity of such a project alone is immense (in addition to the immensity of the dam itself).

How interesting to have a bit of personal perspective added in relation to this project (your father's)...

Good data about Yacyretá. I know about the distribution of energy from the plant is fifty-fifty and some percentage (10 - 20%) is sold from Paraguay to Argentina.

Itaipu, not far away from there is the largest dam in South America.
