I received this from one of my sons many years ago, as either a Father's Day or birthday gift. It's got to be at least 20 years ago; too long to remember. I do seem to recall that, at the time, I didn't expect it to hold up very long. After all, it's not made by one of the well known tool companies. In fact, there's no indication of who made it, or where. The other puzzling thing is that -- try as I might -- I can't find any indication of how the mechanism was put into the wood enclosure or case and then the case closed up. No fasteners, no visible seam. It just appears to be a solid block of wood with a hole or slot from which the measuring tape emerges.

I don't use it in the workshop but do keep it handy in the kitchen for making measurements around the house. It still works as smoothly as when new. Guess it just goes to show -- don't judge a book by its cover. Or something like that.
