Many of the sedimentary rocks along this stretch of coastline exhibit this characteristic. After careful examination of a few rocks we decided that the center of the rock was the color of the original rock, and that after the rock separated from it's original context, some diffusion of new compounds entered the rock from the surface. Much in the way that a marshmallow, submerged in red food coloring would exhibit a band of color when cut open. The thickness of the band of color would depend on the porosity of the marshmallow and amount of time it spent submerged.
