DIY dia copy, the simple way.

I have about 600 slides from the years 1970-1985. Last year I borrowed a slidescanner to digitise the slides , but it was not a success. That machine gave an exception, and that would mean that I should update all the pictures again .

A few weeks ago I saw this post that inspired me.

I got the idea to use my PC-screen (white) as a light box , and to set the picture of the PC-screen as the White Balance.

Then it is quite simple. I was satisfied about the first experiment.

I made a holder for mass production. The holder consists of three small pieces plywood (glued), with the center is a few millimeters back, so that the slide can be pushed in. The photo shooting is such that the slide is full screen, so I do not need to cut. I set the camera in AV-mode with aperture = 5.6, shutter speed is automatically determined by the amount of light needed.

I focussed once in live-mode. Pictures are shot with a remote control.

Lights are out, in order to combat glare. But the PC screen provides enough light to work. In a few hours I made 175 slides.

here are some results:

To demonstrate the quality, I have the top picture zoomed to 100% (ie full size image; PICASA)
