While Woo, Ron, Scott, Philip and I escaped Toronto for a road trip to Milton and Georgetown, things got out of hand in town during the G20 with the burning of police cars, window breaking and other vandalism. We were shocked to hear on the radio on the drive back into town about pepper bullets being used on protesters as well as the fires. One police car was set on fire here in front of Steve's Music. The fire was so intense, it melted part of Steve's sign.
Philip and I were actually riding the streetcar down from Bathurst subway station the event of the incident and we could see billowing black smoke downtown as we made our way down. Initially, I thought it was the cop cars we had heard about on the radio down near Wellington and Bay due to the angle we were viewing the smoke at. But as we travelled south, I realize the smoke was on Queen Street and as we passed through the intersection at Bathurst and Queen, I realized the fire was near Spadina! This was just too close for comfort to me! We went to investigate a few days later when things had calmed down a bit.
So sad and disheartening to hear that things got so ugly so easily.
