Onam vannae

Newer Older

Onam the harvest festival of kerala.We celebrate the visit of Mahabali, the wise,judicious, generous king who ruled kerala long long ago..The legend has it that those were the happiest of all times.No discrimination on the basis of caste or creed. Rich and poor were equally treated. There was neither crime, nor corruption. People did not even lock their doors, as robbery was never heard of.No sorrows nor diseases.But this happiness did not last long :-( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahabali

    great presentation, and interesting festivity, also I cannt know what is in the dishes, so many things and colors on that wonderfull green surface!

    I'll tell you now something interesting perhaps to you. We are a lot less different one from the other. Some legends and believes are held in far countries, and different religions.

    In Hungary, the biggest king was Mathias Corvin around 1450. He become king (and not an inherited one) at 15 years old and gained many wars and amassed a huge library of manuscripts also from all over the world.

    But most, he was the just king. He wanted poor people been well treated. So often he put on simple clothes and went into the country to see what is happening. He was born, in the same city as me.

    Once, he went there in poor clothes and seen people cutting and amassing wood in front of the judge's house. He set down, but not long. A servant of the judge came and obliged him to work.

    To make it short, he was bitten because he asked how much he will be paid, and finally put to work all day. He succeded to put his name on three logs. Next morning, he returned to the city in kings clothes and all his court followers.

    How you treat the people here? he asked;
    Very well, the judge answered.
    Are they paid for their work?
    They got what they desserve.

    He put the servant open the logs and showed his name and punished the judge (or had his head cut his depending of others)

    And each time the story is finished: under the Mathias king times, all people was well treated in our country, all were happy and streaved. He was a just king, our best king.

    We have a big statue of him in center of the town, also he did regn in the capital of Hungary and not in our, relatively small city.
