This photograph doesn't ring true for some reason. Seriously, there's something about it that seems "off" to me, like it may not be as old as portrayed? The child seems too "modern" for lack of a better word.

Modernism relates to the final years of the XIXth century, the picture looks "up to date" to me....

writermom1: Google "Wonderful World of Albert Kahn". There's a book & BBC documentary of his photography expedition he did around the world from the 1900s to the 1920s. This photograph of the girl is reminiscent of many of the photos you'll see in his collection. This color photography process (autochrome) provided such vivid colors that many of the pictures look like they could've been taken yesterday. Hence the "modern" effect.

I also saw some of the Albert Kahn documentary. We are so customed to seeing old photos in black and white that when we see them in colour - they sort of make you jump because the people suddenly become 'real' and look more modern. Well they did to me - that's probably why it 'doesn't ring true'.
Personally I love this little girl - she's found old scarves and bits and pieces from the drawer to dress up in and has lined up all her dolls - just like I used to do when I was 5 or 6. (The me you can see next to this comment box!)
