Wrathful Night in the City of Light

    Prev Next

I shot this one the same night as Lightning Storm #1 & #2 - pretty full-on night. This one is looking north from Royal National Park to Sydney., the other two were looking south. You're looking at about 20km of city in this shot so this bolt would have been at least 10-15km long by my reckoning.
For those who missed the backstory on the other 2 photos here it is:
This is the second storm I've photographed at night from Royal National Park just south of Sydney Australia. And we've just had a third which I also got so we've been having some great light shows recently. Unlike the first one which was a few kilometers away from where I was photographing this one ended up right on top of me and got deeply scary at one point (had to hide under a rock overhang and the camera got soaked). But it still works - I tell you the Canon 30D can take a hammering - mine constantly gets soaked by seaspray and waterfalls and just tkeeps on going and it's brilliant for night shots.

wow! it's quite stunning with a black background. I love how the clouds cover and reveal parts of the lightning streak. So does this mean you're in Australia? I need to go down there and have you be my teacher! and pray that your daughter won't be anywhere near me to catch me in the most unflattering position:) smile..and have a great weekend my friend:)

Hi Sam - thanks for your lovely comments. Yeah I'm in Australia - I tell you what - if you come to OZ I'll swap you some landscape teaching for some of your brilliant portrait skills! And yes, if my daughter is around watch out - she has a very mischievous streak.
