Shibati (or Eighteen Stairs) is an old neighborhood built on the steep slopes of Chongqing, a city which is sandwiched between Jialing river and Yangtze River. The bowels of this area consist of a complex labyrinth of small, overcrowded houses and shops. It is home to many low income families who lived and worked there for generations.
Like many parts of China which is undergoing a rebuilding frenzy, this neighborhood will soon be demolished.
拆 is the Chinese character commonly seen on buildings which are designated to be demolished.
