Snake Doctor

Newer Older

I don't know the common name of this dragonfly species but in Oklahoma and Texas, I've always heard them called "Snake Doctors". There seem to be a million of them flying around right now.

This guy was drying his new wings on the antenna of my car yesterday afternoon.

    Thanks for that. That was what we wore in the Winter. Plain ones with a Square Toe. They were a really a light tan colour. Spent a lot of time polishing with Ox Blood to darken them down.

    I saw one of these guys in late June... but the one I saw had a different wing pattern.

    Thanks all!

    nalilo: I grew up in Henryetta and they were thick around there in the summer and should be plentiful in OKC. In fact, when I was a kid, I used to be scared of them because of their name. :-)

    Thank goodness that's not a flagpole...

    Could the species be Libellula luctosa;
    Widow Skimmer?

    Thanks Crfullmoon. The Widow Skimmer looks very close to this species and may be the same.
