Community Toilet in Dharavi, Mumbai, India by Caroline Boudreaux

Set to the far side of the slum, for 45 cents per month, a family in Dharavi can use this "toilet block". A resident can also pay 2 rupees (5 cents) to use it one time. There is a house above this block that is a coveted residence to the people of the slum because the person responsible for the bathroom block gets a free house, a salary of $66 USD a month and free bathroom use. This system has proved to work well because no one has more of an interest in keeping a bathroom clean than the family that lives above it.
