Ben Arthur Cairn

Hoooooray!!!! Finally reached the top of the North peak, after a chilling climb on my hands and knees. The rock face was covered with compacted snow as in the foreground. My boots had no grip at all and the rocks were too smooth to hold on to. If it wasn't for taking this photograph I would have turned back from the summit! (the things I do for a good pic!) By this time my fingers had gone numb and couldn't compose properly due to my constant trembling. I wanted to frame the kern a bit more far away but realised that there was a sheer cliff face about 5m from where I was squatting. With a drop of about 100ft onto jagged rocks below. The phrase 'Shitting it' doesn't even come close...

Ben Arthur, otherwise known as ‘The Cobbler’, is a very popular mountain for climbers just on the shores of Loch Long. It’s pretty difficult normally but the conditions were worse than imagined, with pack ice and hardened snow everywhere on the steep slopes. Going was very hard, and we all fell several times! It was one of the most beautiful and yet one of the most terrifying climbing experiences so far. And damnit it wasn’t even a Munro!!!
