The Secret On-Street Bike Parking Corral Of Santa Monica

This gem of progressive parking policy, something that looks like only Portland could have made it up and some of the best bike parking in the City of Santa Monica is tucked away on a little rarely traveled piece of Olympic to serve the homeless shelter there. Santa Monica seems to be sending the message that only homeless people are interested in permanent, safe and secure on street bike parking.

When I first spotted this sans camera, services were being offered and the racks were at least 3/4 full with bikes. This has to be a a relatively recent addition to the street as it is not present in Google Street View, which confirmed this space was previously metered parking spaces.

Oh and those businesses that have been practically begging the city for bike racks for years, denied time and time again. Getting on-street parking converted to valet use seems pretty common and easy for business to do in this city though.
