British Wildlife Centre - June 2010 - Snowy Owl Panting
It was very hot on Sunday and this poor owl was brought out to entertain with a bit of flying but he had other ideas. After a couple of short hops he decided it was not his idea of fun so the young lady had to bring him around on her gauntlet. He was very well behaved given he was dressed for the Arctic. Beautiful piercing eyes and very soft to the touch.
I am not a great fan of animals in captivity but all the animals here at the Centre have been rescued from some plight or other in their youth and would not now survive in the wild. For all that it is great to get so close to animals and birds you would have little chance to see in their natural habitat.
This female bird was, of course, named Hedwig but since, in the Harry Potter books, Hedwig is a female Snowy Owl it is not entirely inappropriate.
