Quiringh van Brekelencam - Young Woman at the Spinning Wheel [1667]
The Leiden genre painter Brekelenkam initially created mainly depictions of simple domestic life before turning to more elegant interior scenes. One of these is the picture shown here of a young woman at the spinning wheel. It shows a young woman at the spinning wheel, to whom the purchase from the market is presented by her entering maid. The small painting presents the ennoblement and idealisation of domestic activities of the middle-class housewife in the 17th century. Van Brekelenkam's small-format, sober interiors with only a few figures are characterised by a very personal style.
