Guard aviation unit about to go ‘wheels up’

CLAY NATIONAL GUARD CENTER, Marietta, Ga., Feb. 3, 2011 – Captain Will Cox (front), who commands the Georgia Army Guard’s Detachment 1, Company C, 1-111th General Support Aviation Brigade, reports his unit “present” for its sendoff ceremony at the Guard’s Aviation Flight Facility No. 2, across the flight ramp on Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Behind him is his unit guidon bearer Spc. Benjamin Sheppard.

 

The 1st of the 111th loads up and flies out Saturday, Feb. 5, for Fort Hood, Texas. It will spend two months there training for its yearlong deployment in Iraq under the active Army’s 40th and 29th Combat Aviation Brigades.

 

Among the more than 100 families, friends and fellow Soldiers who said farewell to the 111th were former Gov. Roy Barnes; State Sen. John Albers (Dist. 56); Maj. Gen. Maria L. Britt, Georgia Army Guard Commander; and Col. Brent Bracewell, who commands 78th Aviation Troop Command, the 111th’s parent headquarters.
