Can the iTouch work like a 3G iPhone would as a data device?

I'm in Europe using my iPod touch (running iPhone software) as I would a 3G iPhone, albeit only in hot spots. So far so good, virtual mapping via WiFi is working, and I'm able to find enough hot spots to do email, twitter, etc! Yeah! Oh, plus I am digging it for playing music too.

Post trip update: Well, it can't. For me anyway. It's a great OUTPUT device but a BAD input device. The story is here: www.techtalkback.com/2008/08/iphone-vs-blackberry-free-ht...
